Cuaresma: Un tiempo de despertar y renovación
This weekend, I am in Vatican City for the Jubilee Year celebrations with the Missionaries of Mercy. Back in 2016, I was appointed a Missionary of Mercy by Pope Francis. Please pray for me and the other Missionaries of Mercy gathering for days of study, penance, and prayer.
Sadly, for too many of us, Lent is a season of doom and gloom, a time to feel bad about all the ways that we are not “measuring up” in our spiritual lives. But this view could not be further from the truth. Lent is a season of refreshment and love, of awakening and rebirth. Lent is a season of mercy!
In fact, the word “lent” comes from the Old English word, “lencten,” which means Spring. Lent is intended to be a springtime for us in our spiritual lives where all can become new again.
St. Paul tells us in the Second Reading today, “Whoever is in Christ is a new creation: the old things have passed away; behold, new things have come. And all this is from God, who has reconciled us to himself through Christ.”
The Gospel Reading, too, is filled with this theme of awakening and the extravagant, life-changing mercy that the Father has for each one of us; it is the well-known parable of the Prodigal Son. This should fill us with gratitude for such a Father! Be refreshed in this love! We are new creations thanks to this mercy!
And what comfort this passage gives to those of us who watch with sorrowful hearts for a return to faith for own “prodigal” loved ones. Our Father is watching and waiting for their return to Him even more eagerly and patiently than we are.
We owe God everything! But let’s start by giving him one little thing. Please join us Thursday, April 10 at 6:30 pm for our Lenten Penance Service. A number of visiting priests will be here for Confession. Invite family and friends who may have been away for a long time to join you! With just the tiniest bit of spiritual “spring cleaning” we can be sure we will be swept up in our Father’s loving embrace and find ourselves in His mercy. That is what Lent is all about!

Este fin de semana, estoy en la Ciudad del Vaticano para las celebraciones del Año Jubilar con los Misioneros de la Misericordia. En 2016, el Papa Francisco me nombró Misionero de Misericordia. Por favor, recen por mí y por los otros Misioneros de Misericordia que se reúnen durante días de estudio, penitencia y oración.
Lamentablemente, para muchos de nosotros, la Cuaresma es una época de pesimismo, un tiempo para sentirnos mal por todas las formas en que no estamos "a la altura" en nuestra vida espiritual. Pero esta visión no podría estar más lejos de la verdad. La Cuaresma es un tiempo de renovación y amor, de despertar y renacimiento. La Cuaresma es un tiempo de misericordia.
De hecho, la palabra "lent" viene del inglés antiguo, "lencten", que significa primavera. La Cuaresma pretende ser para nosotros una primavera en nuestra vida espiritual, en la que todo puede volver a ser nuevo.
San Pablo nos dice en la segunda lectura de hoy: "El que vive según Cristo es una criatura nueva: para él todo lo viejo ha pasado. Ya todo es nuevo. Todo esto proviene de Dios, que nos reconcilió consigo por medio de Cristo".
También la lectura del Evangelio está llena de este tema del despertar y de la misericordia extravagante que el Padre tiene para con cada uno de nosotros; es la conocida parábola del hijo pródigo. Esto debería llenarnos de gratitud por un Padre así. Refrescanse en este amor. Somos nuevas criaturas gracias a esta misericordia.
Y qué consuelo nos da este pasaje a los que esperamos con corazón triste el regreso a la fe de nuestros seres queridos "pródigos". Nuestro Padre está vigilando y esperando su regreso a Él con más ansia y paciencia que nosotros.
¡Se lo debemos todo a Dios! Pero empecemos por darle una pequeña cosa. Por favor, únase a nosotros el jueves 10 de abril a las 6:30 pm para nuestro Servicio de Penitencia de Cuaresma. Un número de sacerdotes visitantes estarán aquí para la Confesión. Invite a familiares y amigos que hayan estado lejos por mucho tiempo a que se unan a ti. Con sólo un poquito de "limpieza de primavera" espiritual podemos estar seguros de que seremos arrastrados por el abrazo amoroso de nuestro Padre y nos encontraremos en Su misericordia. De eso se trata la Cuaresma.
