The Heart of a Shepherd: Praying for the 267th Successor of Peter

Orando por el 267º sucesor de Pedro

Our Bible readings continue with hope in the abundant new life of our Risen Lord! Three times Jesus asked Peter, “Do you love me?”  And three times when Peter responded, “Yes,” Jesus commissioned Peter to care for his sheep.  As the Cardinal-electors enter the conclave this week to elect a new Pope, the 267th successor of Saint Peter, let us pray with them and for them!  May our new Pope say, “Yes, I love you, Jesus, and I will tend to your church.”

The challenge to be Pope is vividly told by Jesus to Peter, “Amen, amen, I say to you when you were younger, you used to dress yourself and go where you wanted; but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.”  We saw this especially in the last weeks of life for Pope Francis.  His death glorified God, as did the death of Saint Peter.  But the call of Jesus continues: “Follow me.”

Please join me in praying for the election of our new Pope:

O God, Eternal Shepherd,

Who govern Your flock with unfailing care,

Grant in Your boundless fatherly love

a pastor for Your Church

who will please You

by His holiness and to us show watchful care.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ,

your Son, who lives and reigns with You

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

God, for ever and ever.

Amen.

Orando por el 267º sucesor de Pedro

Nuestras lecturas bíblicas continúan con la esperanza en la abundante vida nueva de nuestro Señor resucitado.  Tres veces preguntó Jesús a Pedro: "¿Me amas?".  Y tres veces, cuando Pedro respondió: "Sí", Jesús encargó a Pedro que cuidara de sus ovejas.  Mientras los cardenales electores entran en el cónclave esta semana para elegir un nuevo Papa, el 267º sucesor de San Pedro, ¡oremos con ellos y por ellos!  Que nuestro nuevo Papa diga: "Sí, te amo, Jesús, y cuidaré de tu Iglesia".

El reto de ser Papa se lo dice vivamente Jesús a Pedro: "Yo te aseguro:  cuando eras joven, tu mismo te ceñías la ropa e ibas adonde querías; pero cuando seas viejo, extenderás los brazos y otro te ceñirá y te llevará adonde no quieras".  Lo vimos especialmente en las últimas semanas de vida del Papa Francisco.  Su muerte glorificó a Dios, como lo hizo la muerte de San Pedro.  Pero la llamada de Jesús continúa: "Sígueme".

Por favor, únanse a mí en la oración por la elección de nuestro nuevo Papa:

Oh Dios, Pastor eterno,

que gobiernas tu rebaño

con cuidado indefectible,

concede en tu ilimitado amor paterno

un pastor para tu Iglesia

que te complazca

por su santidad y nos muestre un cuidado vigilante.

Por nuestro Señor Jesucristo,

tu Hijo, que vive y reina contigo

en la unidad del Espíritu Santo,

Dios, por los siglos de los siglos.

Amén.
